Love the food here! The place is a bit dated but for me the food is on point. I had the #3 which is Kung Pao Chicken with shrimp, egg foo young and fried rice. All delicious.

We ordered carry out: the Szechuan family dinner for three. When I lifted the bag upon picking up, it weighed like 15 pounds! So much food!! When I got home and spread the food out across the dining room table, it looked like a feast fit for a king. My family ate like royalty and I felt like the emperor from the 5th dynasty celebrating a grand victory while looking over my empire. Everything was delicious.

Rainbow Dragon Restaurant

Nestled on 12840 SE Stark St Portland, OR 97233, Rainbow Dragon Restaurant brings together the vibrant flavors of classic Chinese cuisine in a setting that feels like home to locals and a welcome discovery to visitors. Whether you're craving comforting noodle soups or crispy orange chicken, this spot stands out as a true gem in Portland’s diverse dining scene.

Rainbow Dragon Restaurant serves authentic Chinese comfort food in Portland

Step inside Rainbow Dragon Restaurant, and the first thing you'll notice is the warm aroma of sesame oil, soy sauce, and sizzling garlic. This cozy eatery may look unassuming from the outside, but its kitchen delivers flavors that locals swear by. Known for generous portions, reasonable prices, and consistently fresh ingredients, the restaurant has built a loyal following across generations. If you're looking for a reliable place to enjoy hot and sour soup, beef with broccoli, or a comforting plate of fried rice, you're in the right place.

The menu reflects a mix of American Chinese favorites and traditional dishes. One customer favorite is the General Tso’s Chicken, perfectly crispy on the outside and tender inside, coated with a sweet-spicy glaze. Another must-try is the House Special Lo Mein, packed with shrimp, beef, and chicken tossed in a savory noodle stir-fry that hits all the right notes. Whether you’re dining in or ordering takeout, you’ll find that every dish comes out piping hot and full of flavor.

Families often stop by after school or on weekends for group meals, and the staff know many regulars by name. Their hospitality, paired with dishes that are both nostalgic and satisfying, makes Rainbow Dragon more than just a neighborhood restaurant—it feels like a part of the community.

The Rainbow Dragon Restaurant menu delivers quality, variety, and heart

Beyond popular entrees, the menu is full of dishes that cater to different tastes and dietary needs. Vegetarians will appreciate the Mapo Tofu (without meat) or the Vegetable Delight, which combines seasonal greens in a delicate garlic sauce. The Egg Foo Young, golden and fluffy, is a classic rarely found prepared so well. And for those who want something a little special, the Seafood Delight brings shrimp, scallops, and imitation crab together in a light white sauce that’s both elegant and comforting.

The kitchen staff takes care with every plate. You can taste the difference in small details—like how the vegetables stay crisp in the stir-fry or how the wontons in their soup are wrapped with finesse. And while many dishes are customizable for spice levels, the flavors never feel overpowering or artificial. It’s clear they don’t cut corners here, which is probably why reviews across platforms like Yelp and Google often mention both the flavor and the consistency.

You won’t need to dress up or plan far in advance. Rainbow Dragon is the kind of place you can walk into after work or stop by during a lunch break. It’s relaxed, unpretentious, and reliable—an honest-to-goodness local favorite.

Locals and visitors alike love the experience at Rainbow Dragon Restaurant

One thing that sets Rainbow Dragon Restaurant apart is how it balances fast service with the feeling of a home-cooked meal. Whether you’re a regular from the nearby neighborhood or a traveler passing through Portland, the staff treats everyone with the same friendly energy. Orders are taken quickly, water glasses stay full, and there’s usually a TV showing the latest game or a friendly chat happening at one of the booths.

Many reviews mention the speed of service, which makes this an ideal spot for quick weekday dinners or spontaneous weekend lunches. It’s also worth noting that the location is convenient for families living in East Portland or anyone commuting via SE Stark Street. Parking is easy, and they also offer reliable takeout for those nights when you’d rather eat on the couch with a good movie.

The restaurant’s no-frills decor adds to the charm—red booths, traditional Chinese prints, and lucky cat statues lend a familiar warmth. It’s the kind of atmosphere that doesn’t try too hard because it doesn’t have to. The food and service do all the heavy lifting.

Comfort, consistency, and community make Rainbow Dragon Restaurant a hidden gem

Diners return not just for the food but because of the way they’re treated. You get the sense that the owners and staff genuinely value their customers, which builds trust over time. Whether it’s your first visit or your fiftieth, you’ll likely leave feeling full—and already planning your next trip back.

If you're in Portland and looking for a restaurant that consistently delivers quality food, warm service, and a sense of neighborhood connection, make your way to Rainbow Dragon Restaurant. It’s a comforting slice of local flavor that keeps people coming back.
